Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach and West Orange County stands firmly in support of Israel’s moral right and responsibility to defend its citizens. Since Israel’s disengagement from Gaza in 2005, more than 6,300 missiles and rockets have been fired from Gaza toward Israeli civilian centers in the south. More than 3,000 were fired in 2008 alone. We pray that the citizens of southern Israel will be able to live in safety and security. Please visit your congregation this weekend, to say a prayer for Israel, a prayer for peace and security in 2009. Today, 35,000 citizens of our sister communities of Kiryat Malachi and Ashkelon Coast are paralyzed by fear, trauma and panic. Schools, from pre-K through college, are closed. Shops are closed. Parents cannot work. Our Ashkelon Coast villages (some located less than 3 miles from the Israeli border with Gaza) have suffered under a barrage of rockets, sometimes averaging one missile every 18 minutes. And December 30th marked the first time that our sister city of Kiryat Malachi, long believed to be out of missile range, was under attack. Locally, several congregations in Orange County have been defaced with anti-Israel messages. Our Jewish institutions have increased security in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies. Community members are participating in rallies, writing letters to their Congressional representatives and newspaper editors, and speaking to the news media. Every voice in support of Israel is needed, now more than ever. Please join with us in supporting Israel, and condemning Hamas terror against Israeli civilians. Here’s how you can help:

Just in case all of you Heebster purists who are determined to light your menorahs like they did back in the day, with olive oil, you are saved! 96 year old Italian oil importers, Luciano Sclafani, knew his oil was tainted with soy, by looking at the price tag! He said people should also think twice if the price seems too cheap. A good lesson all around doncha’ think? Check out the oli you are buying especially if you are allergic to soy or peanuts, the oil that was used to cut the olive oil. So to get the true goods for Chanukah buy Israeli Olive oil. Your Menorah will thank you!

A fun-paced bike ride to the beach from the Jewlicious Festival on Sunday morning, March 1, 2009.
We will be taking several routes that range from 6 miles to 20 miles round-trip. Bikers will participate in a beach clean-up, have a meal, then ride back.
Many people are turning to alternative transportation with the rising gas prices and higher consciousness of environmental impacts of cars. The bike ride will address these issues from a Jewish perspective while getting some exercise and introducing people to a really social form of cycling. The hope is this will turn into a monthly bike ride that we continue to do as a Jewlicious program in Los Angeles.
Bikers need to bring bikes, but we also will be loaning bikes through sponsors and a bike co-op.

The Jewlicious Bike Ride is being run by Jewlicious volunteer, Sasha Perry, age 24, a graduate of Chapman Film School. Sasha has been biking for several years and is a veteran environmental activist, promoting healthy living in concert with Jewish and environmental values.
